Our Montana Fly Fishing Guides
Our guide team is based in Livingston, Montana. We guide year-round across Southwest Montana and nearby waters, building each day around conditions, guest goals, and the kind of experience you want.
You’re not booking a river name here. You’re booking a guided day with the right person. Once you’re on the calendar, we match water and timing as conditions line up, whether that means a classic freestone float, a technical spring creek session, or a winter day on Harrison Reservoir.
Every guide you see below is capable of adapting to changing conditions and different experience levels. The difference is style, pacing, and the kind of day each guide is especially good at delivering.
MATT SWAN
Matt’s guiding foundation was built on the Colorado River at Lees Ferry, where precision matters: reading seams, controlling drifts, and understanding how subtle changes in flow affect trout behavior. That tailwater education shaped the way he approaches every fishery he guides today.
He later guided with The Fly Shop in Redding, California, splitting seasons between Northern California trout and steelhead and Montana summers. That schedule built range across freestones, spring creeks, tailwaters, stillwaters, and big Western rivers, the exact mix that makes Southwest Montana so special.
Matt now lives full time in Southwest Montana and focuses on putting the right day together for each guest. He is an FFI Casting Instructor and a graduate of FOAM’s Guiding for the Future program, with a calm teaching style that works especially well for beginners, mixed groups, and anglers who want clear instruction and real takeaways.
In winter, Matt also runs our Harrison Reservoir ice-fishing program, offering a completely different Montana experience when the rivers are quiet and the days are crisp.
JAN AXTELL
Jan is a personable, upbeat guide with a deep wading focus and a real love for the Paradise Valley spring creeks. He’s especially good at helping anglers see small seams, subtle depth changes, and how trout use quiet currents.
In winter, Jan’s work as a commercial fly tyer and instructor shows up on the water. His patterns and teaching reflect a practical understanding of seasonal behavior, presentation, and the small details that matter on clear water.
Jan’s background includes years in the outdoor industry and roles that demand calm decision-making and guest care. His days tend to feel relaxed and encouraging, making him a strong fit for anglers who want a patient pace, clear instruction, and a spring-creek style approach that transfers to any river you fish.
SAM SPECTOR
Sam lives full time in Big Timber and spends much of his season rowing the Stillwater and Boulder Rivers. He’s one of the strongest oarsmen on this water and is known for putting boats in high-percentage slots that many visitors float right past.
Sam’s background in the school system shows up in the way he teaches. He’s exceptionally patient with beginners and kids, breaks things into simple steps, and keeps the day fun without losing progress.
He is a graduate of FOAM’s Guiding for the Future program (top of his class) and brings a steady, teaching-first style that’s a great fit for families, newer anglers, and anyone who wants a supportive pace on classic Montana freestones.
CHRIS GERONO
Chris is a highly technical, well-rounded guide with decades on the water across the West. His strength is diagnosing what’s happening quickly, making small adjustments that produce big results, and explaining the “why” in a way that makes sense immediately.
As the owner of Boise River Guides, Chris has built a program centered on instruction, river education, and approachable coaching. He is also an FFI Casting Instructor and brings a calm, structured teaching style that works especially well for anglers who want to improve efficiently.
Chris also serves as the Lead Instructor for Swan’s Guide School, helping set the standard for professional instruction, decision-making, and on-water clarity across our team.

BILL SCHOONOVER
Bill’s fly fishing roots were shaped on the technical spring creeks of Pennsylvania, where details and presentation matter. That early influence shows up in his patience, observation, and the way he helps anglers see water clearly.
He has guided in multiple regions and now guides in Southwest Montana, where his calm style fits a wide range of anglers, from first-timers to experienced guests who want practical refinements and a steady pace.
In winter, Bill is a key part of our Harrison Reservoir ice-fishing program. He enjoys the puzzle of structure, depth, and fish movement under the ice and does a great job introducing guests to Montana’s cold-season opportunity.
MATT KELLY
Matt brings a calm, adaptable style with an emphasis on clear communication and simple, effective instruction. Guests tend to like his steady pace, practical explanations, and the way he helps anglers find rhythm without overcomplicating the day.
He’s especially good at reading varied freestone structure and explaining positioning, timing, and presentation in a way that feels approachable for newer anglers and still useful for experienced ones.
In the colder months, Matt shifts into our Harrison Reservoir ice-fishing program. If you’re curious about winter fishing, he brings genuine enthusiasm and the practical know-how to make it comfortable and productive.
